Between 3.5 and 4.5 years of age (depending on the child’s development), children move to the Nursery programme. At this age, children have great play skills and are increasingly confident. Most children are inquisitive, asking “why” about everything, and enjoy the company of their peers. They show keen interest in story time, becoming very receptive to information and predicting the consequences of actions. Their visual perception increases and children become more aware of words, showing an interest in reading. White Lodge teachers start to introduce more challenging units of enquiry, as well as extending the children’s play.
In “Jolly Jingle” stories and related activities, educators introduce a new letter each week, reinforcing the sound of the letter. The Jolly Phonics programme is a multi-sensory programme helps expand children’s vocabulary, and complements White Lodge’s own curriculum. The Nursery stage introduces levels one to three of the Jolly Phonics programme.
Growing with Mathematics
The Growing with Mathematics programme introduces different math concepts and instills a love of mathematics in our students. Children learn through active experimentation and interacting with their environment and their peers. At this age, children begin to rote count and have a strong liking for shapes. Levels one to ten of the Growing with Mathematics programme capitalize on these skills, giving children the foundational skills to excel in maths.
At the Nursery stage, we offer the Folens Science Foundation programme. This programme is offered as an extended option, so children can acquire an appreciation and respect for the scientific method of understanding the world. The programme is organized into themes that develop over the course of the lessons. Children will learn how science affects their lives, learning about their bodies, living and non-living things, materials, and forces. The children will explore these ideas through investigation and “Scientific Stories” which instill awareness and encourage active engagement.
At the Nursery stage, the main objective of our Mandarin programme is to create awareness of the concept of a second language. Our 20-minute programme, offered daily, introduces simple words and phrases through songs, stories, and dramatization.
Bahasa Malaysia is offered three times a week through simple words and songs relating to the self and objects around the self.
